Teaching & Presenting

Dr. Laura DeThorne being taped for a live educational session.

I teach, present, and provide workshops on autism, communication, neurodiversity, evidence-based practice, and research methods. I’ve developed and taught university courses across multiple institutions, receiving awards in both undergraduate and graduate education at the University of Illinois. Additionally, I developed three continuing education courses for Medbridge. One of these courses, focused on culturally-responsive clinical practices, was created in collaboration with Dr. Megan-Brette Hamilton and is currently available for free online. You can access it here: click to go to course.

I have given over 85 presentations and workshops for a wide range of organizations, including schools, universities, businesses, professional associations, and community groups, both in the U.S. and abroad. For example, I spoke about neurodiversity-affirming special education supports for Oakland Schools, the Statewide Autism Resources & Training Project, and ASHA Schools Connect. I also presented on healthy workplace communication practices for Payroc and PayTech Women, and shared ideas with staff at the Kalamazoo Valley Museum on how to make their environment more autism-friendly. Mentoring & Coaching

I offer individualized mentoring for administrators, directors, and faculty to advance equity, manage conflicts, create healthy communication practices, support research careers, and build a workplace culture of compassionate accountability. For example, I worked with university faculty to address racialized tensions among students, helped a program director design a series of four workshops to improve communication practices within the program, and was asked by an executive director of a nonprofit to assist with performance management procedures and communication strategies for handling unexpected questions in important meetings. I have mentored more than 30 student research projects and have supported several new faculty in developing their research careers.

Reviewing & Developing Documents

I review and help create documents related to university administration, staff processes, equity initiatives, and scholarly work. For example, I’ve drafted an admissions rubric for a graduate program, coordinated program reaccreditation reports, created a clinic dress code policy and vaccination waiver process, and developed a work-from-home policy for a nonprofit. I’ve also written or reviewed many grant proposals, journal articles, book chapters, and theses. Additionally, I’ve worked as an editor for multiple journals and served on grant review panels, including for the National Institutes of Health.

“I value Laura’s dedication to tackling issues directly as opposed to pushing them under the rug or trying to use back-channel communication to address an issue.”
