Dr. Laura DeThorne
I founded Neurodiverse by Design, LLC based on 20 years of evidence-based expertise in communication, autism, and neurodiversity. I received my research doctorate in Speech & Hearing Science from the University of Illinois and am an ASHA-certificated speech-language pathologist. I’ve built community partnerships while working in a variety of university settings. Through my various roles as researcher, administrator, teacher, mentor, parent, and advocate, I’ve gained a deep appreciation for the importance of neurodivergent perspectives, thoughtful communication practices, compassionate accountability, and the ability to think outside the box.

Researcher and Administrator
I’m a researcher with more than 70 publications focused on communication, autism, and neurodiversity and have served as a journal editor on the same topics. I’ve received funding and reviewed grants from organizations like the National Institutes of Health, and I’ve shared my research through over 85 presentations across several countries.
I’ve held administrative roles at three different institutions, managing programs in Allied Health Sciences. I prioritize clear communication, compassionate accountability, sustainability, evidence-based practice, and equitable processes. In these roles, I’ve:
- Organized retreats, updated policies, and built international partnerships
- Coordinated professional accreditation processes
- Led equity initiatives focused on systemic change
- Managed budgets and adjusted programs during times of major change, like the COVID pandemic

Teacher & Mentor
I’ve been teaching for over 25 years, including courses in autism, building healthy communities, communication diversity, language development, models of disability, evidence-based practice, and research methods. One of the most rewarding parts of my work has been mentoring more than 30 student research projects. I’ve learned so much with my students and been recognized by awards for excellence in teaching and mentorship.
Parent & Advocate
One of my greatest and most humbling teachers has been life experience with neurodiversity. I’ve lived with chronic migraines for the last two decades, and I have raised two neurodivergent sons, one of whom is Autistic. You can read here about how he, and other Autistic voices, have shaped my work. In addition to my family and talking about neurodiversity, I enjoy a strong cup of coffee and a walk in the woods.
